With over a million search results for the best skincare products for 40s, it’s safe to say I’m not the only one looking for high-performance ingredients to improve my skin health. And that couldn’t be more true as I enter this new phase of my life. I turned the big 4-0 earlier this year and while I don’t ever want to be in my 20s again, I do miss that 20s collagen and high cell turnover. But I’m not writing this to lament about wrinkles and fine lines either. (But I will admit I have gone under the needle and have tried almost every buzzy beauty treatment.)
No, I am embracing my 40s wholeheartedly because, in all seriousness, I have never felt better. I am emotionally more stable and available, I am spiritually connected, and I am physically well and comfortable in my body. (Mind you, it’s always a work in progress.) But, I’m entering this new decade with a newfound confidence in myself. And I can say with certainty: all that wisdom and growth is worth it.

How does your skin change as you get older?
“When you hit your 40s, your skin starts to experience a natural decline in collagen and elastin production,” says Sylvia Brownlee, Esthetician & Founder of Skin By Brownlee & Co.
Together, collagen and elastin keep your skin firm and lifted. When they’re gone, they’re gone for good. Without collagen working to stimulate cell turnover, your skin can become “duller and more prone to hyperpigmentation,” says Browlee. “Even hydration levels drop as we age, which can result in drier skin and a compromised skin barrier.”
Despite what the media tells us, we don’t turn into pumpkins at 40. “Aging is a privilege! Focus on nourishment over correction, and embrace products that make your skin look and feel its best!”
Best ingredients for your skin in your 40s
As your skin matures, your skincare routine should adapt to support quicker cell turnover. More cell turnover = brighter, firmer skin. This calls for active ingredients that promote collagen alongside nourishing ingredients that flood your skin with hydration.
According to Brownlee, your skincare toolkit should include:
- Retinol (or gentle retinoids): Which, says Brownlee, “significantly helps with collagen production, smooths fine lines, and promotes cell turnover.”
- Vitamin C: “A powerful ingredient to prioritize for brightening and evening out skin tone while protecting against free radical damage.”
- Peptides: A hydrating protein that works wonders at “firming and strengthening the skin’s barrier” while hydrating and promoting both collagen and elastin.
- Hyaluronic acid: ‘Which deeply hydrates, plumps, and improves elasticity.” It works immediately for instantly more plump-lookig skin, while feeding your skin at the cellular level for long term hydration, too.
- Niacinamide: A superstar often found in serums that “balances skin tone, reduces inflammation, and supports the skin barrier.”
- Alpha Arbutin: Is a enzyme that’s like supercharged Vitamin C, working to brighten your complexion, fade hyperpigmention, and prevent future dark spots.
- Kojic Acid: A BHA that is “helpful in targeting dark spots and hyperpigmentation for a more even complexion.”
And of course, don’t forget SPF. “Sunscreen is your best anti-aging investment!” It also helps protect the collagen you have left, which can wither thanks to oxidative stress and/or excess sun exposure.
“Protecting your skin against UV rays prevents premature aging and dark spots.”
How to make a skincare routine for your 40s
“Your focus should shift to choosing products that boost collagen, increase hydration, and improve overall skin tone,” says Browlee. Simple but effective skincare products are your best bet to nourish your skin from the inside out and maintain that natural glow.
Combined with targeted treatments — like facial massages, cryotherapy, and in-office treatments — and weekly exfoliation, your 40s might see you showing off your best skin yet.
Creating a morning and evening ritual is only one part of caring for your skin in your 40s. “Lifestyle also plays a huge role, don’t forget to hydrate, eat skin-loving foods, and prioritize stress management. “
