Over the years, I’ve learned that the traditional black smokey eye is just not my thing. Maybe it’s that I have quite a fair complexion, or that I just prefer a lighter hand when it comes to my own makeup, but I can’t seem to bring myself to go full on smoke out when it comes to eye makeup. Enter the bronze smokey eye.

On top of being more user friendly (less black shadow mess everywhere), the bronze smoky eye is incredibly flattering.

Pretty much anyone can wear a variation of it and instantly adds warmth to your face – something desperately needed as the winter pale sets in. With the changing leaves, sweater weather, and darkening skies — rust, sienna and bronze can majorly spice things up. It’s a fun trend for fall and one that will warm up your look come winter, plus carry you all the way to New Years Eve. Read on for inspo and tips on how to make it work for you!

Picking the Right Shade

Most warm toned bronze shadows are universally flattering and work well for anyone. However, if you have strong pink undertones in your skin, look for a slightly more ash toned brown, as something too orange may clash with your skin. If you have warmer toned skin, get adventurous and try out a full-on orange smokey eye!

Application Tricks

I prefer this look sans heavy eyeliner, so try wetting your eyeliner brush with setting spray before dipping in a slightly darker shadow. Line lash line, then smudge out with the same shadow or a slightly lighter shadow. Sweep shadow under the lower lash line, focusing the shadow on the outer half. If you have hooded lids, keep the majority of the shadow in the outer corner  of the eye for a lifting and eye opening effect. If you do use a liner, be sure to use a soft gel based one that blends out easily. The key to a good smokey eye is all in the blending – smudge away! Finish with a couple coats of mascara!
