August 2016

By Camille Styles

Morning y’all, happy AUGUST? (how is that possible) Today we’ve got the second installation of my What to Read, Watch, & Listen To This Month series where I basically share all the media I’m currently ingesting and loving. The past month has been a little heavy on CNN and national conventions (I’m telling you people, weirder than fiction), but I’ve still managed to squeeze in some other great television, books, and podcasts. Click through the slides for my current faves, and I’d love to hear in the comments what’s on your list this month. Especially music — I need some new ideas!

READ

Green Kitchen Smoothies: Healthy and Colorful Smoothies for Every Day, David Frankiel & Luise Vindahl

Just when I thought I was all out of smoothie ideas, this beautiful cookbook came along. A smoothie really is my favorite way to start a busy day with tons of energy, and this book inspires me to mix up my routine.

READ

Originals: How Non-Conformists Move the World, Adam Grant

I’m currently reading this book very slowly because there is so much packed into every page, I have to take it all in. Grant makes the case for why many of us are smart and hard-working, but not necessarily pushing ourselves to reach our fullest potential creatively. He shares how to do it, and even throws some common misconceptions out the window (like the assumption that procrastination is always a negative.)

READ

Shoe Dog: A Memoir  by the Creator of Nike, Phil Knight

This book was a total surprise; it didn’t really look or sound like my type of read, but once I dove into the fascinating story of Knight’s life and the birth of Nike, I was hooked. It’s a valuable lesson in determination and overcoming countless obstacles to create something great.

WATCH

The Night Of on HBO

Oh my gosh. The pilot episode was one of the most stressful and addictive 75 minutes of television I’ve ever watched, and now I’m totally engrossed in this fictional murder story that delves into the criminal justice system and how it affects the life of one very unlucky guy.

WATCH

Stranger Things on Netflix

ed. note: Landrie’s been raving about this one around the office, so I asked her to pop in and tell us about it.

As a child of the 80’s, Stranger Things, feels nostalgic in all the best ways, namely Winona Ryder. Equal parts Goonies, E.T. and Stephen King – this eight-part Netflix series is an easy weekend binge (I may have done it in one day). Get your pals together, grab some Tab, and push play quick because everyone’s talking about this one.

The retro score to Stranger Things, by Austinites Kyle Dixon and Michael Stein, is also totally on point. Full soundtrack coming soon, but this Spotify playlist will definitely do for now.

LISTEN

Here’s the Thing, Alec Baldwin

In his unmistakably sexy voice, Baldwin has conversations with artists, policy makers and performers – and uncovers their stories and their inspiration, what decisions changed their careers, and what relationships influenced their work.

LISTEN

Pardon My French, Garance Doré

I’ve been a big fan of Garance’s blog for years, so I’m loving her podcast which feels like peeking in on an intimate conversation between friends. She interviews everyone from actors (Emily Mortimer and Rose Byrne) to designers (Isaac Mizrahi) to musicians (Corinne Bailey Rae) to talk about life, love, style, and more all with her signature humor and vulnerability.
