Since October is the month of dreams around here, let’s cut right to the chase: you can’t get into that dreamy state without first falling into a deep, restorative sleep. For some, sleep comes so naturally we’ve barely given it a thought. For the rest of us, the very idea of not having to “think” about getting a good night’s sleep sounds like a total luxury since at some point in our lives, we’ve experienced how elusive it can be. As one who falls into the latter group, I like to take a proactive approach when it comes to a truly restful night. A big part of my strategy is mental and another important component is healthy habits, but I’ve also got a few products up my sleeve that aid in sleepytime… or at least trick my body into thinking they do. I’ve been hearing about weighted blankets for a while now and been intrigued, so I finally pulled the trigger on this one. I love a good epsom salt bath, and whether its sleep-inducing effects are scientific or more of a folk remedy, there’s no doubt that it relaxes me and helps me wind down after a busy day. Considering that the epsom salt is a great source of magnesium (key for sleep), an argument could be made from a scientific standpoint, too. I add 2 heaping cups to a very hot bath and then soak the day away.
When it comes to supplements to help with sleep, you might have to try a couple before you find the right one for you. I headed to a nearby pharmacy that specializes in natural remedies and talked to the pharmacist about all the different options. I really like this natural calming supplement that supports healthy levels of GABA and calms anxiety.
