5 Ways to Get Energized If You Didn’t Get Enough Sleep

July 9th, 2018

First off, I am a major advocate of getting adequate sleep. Sleep is the way our body restores itself from sickness, enhances cognition and focus, and even helps our bodies maintain a healthy weight, so consistently getting good sleep is probably the single most important step we can take towards health and vitality. And as much as I attempt to practice good sleep habits and get a full 8 hours every night, let’s be honest: sometimes it just doesn’t happen. Whether I stayed up too late ticking off my to-do list, took an overnight flight for work, dealt with a toddler who had a nightmare and wet the bed all in the same night, or experienced one of my occasional bouts of insomnia, I’m all too familiar with that foggy feeling of my alarm going off and realizing that I’m headed into a busy workday on far too little sleep. I used to get really anxious when this happened (what if my brain can’t function on that conference call? Am I going to be cranky with the kids all day?), but over time I’ve learned a few hacks that help me get through the occasional missed night’s sleep without missing a beat. Read on for 5 things I always do to help me feel energized when I’m sleep-deprived.

ps – Here are some great tips on how to fall asleep faster.

  1. Ahhh, the long awaited topic of sleep! I don’t know how some people can possibly pull all nighters or stay up until 3 and wake up at 7! That just isn’t possible for me, and as you pointed out, it’s not good for the body either. When I took a 14 hour trip to China a managed only 1 hour of sleep, I easily saw the result it took on my body. I agree with all of the tips you mentioned and not only do these tips help you to get more energied but sleep better too. (You may have mentioned that in the beginning!) I always keep water by my bed and side, as you do too, but I also make sure to drink a full glass of water before going to bed and immediately once waking up! Although some people need pills and medicine to help them go to bed and feel awake, the best remedies are always the most natural of ones and the ones that you can make a change to!
