Add it to the list of reasons why I love calling Austin home: it’s amazing to live in such a great coffee town. But who has the best coffee in Austin? Since we’re spoiled with so many locally roasted, owned, and operated coffee joints, the options can be overwhelming.

Well it’s time to celebrate all of the wonderful cafés this town has to offer, and round up our favorite spots to get the best coffee in Austin.

Visiting your neighborhood barista is one of the easiest ways to support our local economy. Plus, the java juice at these coffee shops tastes so much better than what you’ll find at the big chains (you know the one), and their beans are a lot cleaner and more fairly traded, too.

That said, the thought of rounding up the best of the best is a bit overwhelming, as no list could be comprehensive enough to include every favorite neighborhood haunt. If your go-to isn’t listed below, I hope you’ll forgive me (and leave a comment)—I know how personal this can feel. Still, I hope you’ll enjoy the 20 best coffee shops in Austin below.

*P.S. Don’t miss our guides to Austin’s best restaurants, Austin’s best shopping, and the 12 most Instagrammable spots in Austin.

Hot L Coffee

Located inside of Carpenter Hotel, Hot(el) Coffee is pretty much everything you could want in a coffee shop—cozy seating, a cool vibe, and the obvious, amazing coffee.

Cosmic Coffee

Cosmic feels like the kind of place your old Austin hippie neighbor might open in their backyard. Think rainwater harvesting, on-site composting, chicken coops, and lush vegetable and herb gardens galore. The only thing they take more seriously than sustainability is their coffee.

The Meteor

Tucked away on South Congress, this café/restuarant/natural wine bar/bike shop is an all-around experience. While their coffee is A-plus, I’m an even bigger fan of their curated natural wine selection and delicious pizzas. With indoor seating and large picnic tables in the back, the meteor is a great place to hang night and day, whether you’re posting up to work or taking a bike ride break with friends.

The coffee is no joke. The Italian La Marzocco machine shines, and when mixed with the people and the atmosphere, you’ll understand why this is an Austin favorite.

Revival Coffee

If you’re into Instagramming your latte, look no further than Revival coffee. Local female restauranteur, Gabriela Bucio, created an unapologetically pink space that will give you as much life as your coffee itself.

This coffee shop has two central locations. Unless you’re seeking out a selfie in front of the “I Love You So Much” mural found at Jo’s South Congress location, we recommend skipping the line and heading to the more chill Downtown version.

A north loop favorite, sip anything from a frozen mocha to a hazelnut latte in a relaxed, cozy environment.

Summer Moon Coffee

Now with almost 30 locations, the Summer Moon on Burnet Road is a popular stop for many North Austinites. They built their own roasters from the ground up and have really perfected their process for unique, wood-fired coffees. It’s safe to say a trip to Summer Moon guarantees an exceptional cup of coffee and some classic Texas hospitality.

West Austin

Mozarts Coffee Roasters

We can’t have a list of the best spots in town without including an Austin classic: Mozarts Coffee Roasters. Sip on the shores of the beautiful Lake Austin year-round, and peruse their extensive selection of baked goods from croissants to cakes.

Civil Goat Coffee

A little further out west in the Cuernavaca neighborhood, this gem is worth the trek. Their specialty coffee is all the rage!
